To get a weathered wood look on the bird houses, I have found leaving just a bit of white showing through looks a bit more rustic. When most of us color things we tend to color in everything, forgetting that white is a color too, so leave a bit of white for highlights here and there. You will soon find out how much you want to leave to get just the feel you are looking for!
